Giving the right people the right level of access is essential for maintaining an efficient and secure reporting environment. This guide explains each user type, how access works, and where to manage user permissions in ClearPoint.

User Types

ClearPoint offers a range of user types to support different roles in your organization. Each user type has its own set of capabilities. Administrators assign user types when creating or editing users.

No Access User

A No Access user cannot log into ClearPoint, but they can still be assigned as an owner of Objectives, Measures, Initiatives, Action Items, and other elements.

This is useful for maintaining historical ownership or reporting structure during offboarding.

Browser User

Browsers can log in and view information they have been granted access to, but cannot make updates. They can still export reports, favorite pages, and receive notifications.

Whenever possible, we recommend assigning Browser access rather than No Access so users can take advantage of navigation, alerts, and visibility features.

Updater User

Updaters can view permitted content and modify update fields—the fields that change each reporting period, such as:

  • Measure data

  • Status indicators

  • Analysis and recommendations

Updaters cannot modify element structure or descriptive fields.

Editor User

Editors can do everything Updaters can do plus:

  • Add new elements (Objectives, Measures, Initiatives, etc.)

  • Edit descriptive fields like Owner, Definition, Charts, Series, Formulas

  • Configure automatic evaluations

  • Customize layouts on detail pages

Scorecard Administrator

Scorecard Admins have all Editor permissions and can administer the scorecards they have access to:

  • Manage scorecard settings

  • Edit scorecard structure

  • Update layouts

  • Create reporting workflows and reminder emails

Administrator

Administrators have full access to the entire ClearPoint account. They can:

  • Create and manage all users

  • Add scorecards

  • Configure periods, defaults, status icons

  • Manage system-wide settings, integrations, API keys, custom fields, and more

💡 This is the highest-level user type in ClearPoint.

By Scorecard User

A By Scorecard user has different permissions depending on the scorecard.
For example:

  • Browser in Scorecard A

  • Updater in Scorecard B

  • Editor in Scorecard C

  • Scorecard Admin in Scorecard D

This gives organizations flexible access control across divisions or departments.

By Group User

By Group permissions allow extremely granular access—down to individual elements and reports.

To use By Group access, you must:

  1. Create a User Group

  2. Define access rules

  3. Assign users to the group

This level of configuration is rarely needed and should be used carefully.
